A global manufacturer
Since 1921, Scott Bader has manufactured materials that are behind many big, successful brands, creating products that people rely on, every day. Today we work with industries, businesses and consumers the world over, providing innovative composite, structural adhesive and functional polymer products. Scott Bader is an employee-owned £200 million global manufacturer employing 750 people across 7 manufacturing sites and 18 global offices.
Our business is based on the simple principle of maintaining a balance between our social purpose and business needs. In 1951 we became the first UK company to hold a Common Ownership Certificate when the Bader family handed over their shares to the Scott Bader Commonwealth Ltd – in simple terms, this means that Scott Bader colleagues own and are responsible for the success and overall wellbeing of the company.

How it all began
It all started in Finsbury Square, London in 1921, when Ernest Bader began developing and selling Celluloids in all its shapes and forms, such as the small windmills proudly placed on children’s’ sandcastle masterpieces.
Soon, he pioneered the first low viscosity nitrocellulose in England, which reduced the time to paint a car from days to hours, with a harder, glossier and more resistant finish.
Such fast growth led to the business being made a private limited company in 1923, as Scott Bader & Co Ltd.
In 1951, Scott Bader became the first employee-owned UK company as Ernest and the Bader family gifted their shares to the workforce through the formation of the Scott Bader Commonwealth, a charitable trust that holds the shares of the company.
Ever since, through robust strategic management and chemical manufacturing excellence, Scott Bader has innovated the global chemical industry and now operates in every continent, across 17 offices and 7 manufacturing sites.

Our Focus on Sustainability
- To become a fully sustainable business by 2036
- To make a positive social impact wherever we operate, to our colleagues and local communities

- Waste
To explore potential re-use or re-purposing of our current waste streams to avoid the need for landfilling or incineration. - Energy
To reduce our CO2 emissions through switching to renewable energy sourced electricity and investigating potential on-site electricity and heat generation. - Raw materials
To improve yields and processing efficiencies and focus on using safer, alternative raw materials, including bio-based raw materials from renewable sources. - Value chains
To move from a linear oil to landfill process to a much more circular one which includes recovery, recycling, reuse and repurposing of materials.
